 What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as “anxiety-free dentistry,” is the use of sedatives during dental procedures, especially for extensive procedures or for patients who suffer from anxiety or phobias. Sedation calms the patient, relieving this fear, as well as soothing any discomfort or pain. As such a safe effective tool, sedatives are backed by the American Dental Association as an instrumental aid for patients during their dental visit.

At Columbia Family Dentist, we have highly trained professionals with the skills to ensure that these tools are properly administered in a way that relieves the patient of all anxiety and fears in order to provide them with the care and treatments they need to enjoy dental health in a pain-free and minimally intrusive way.

Before Sedation Dental Treatment

Before your sedation dentistry procedure, it is crucial that you tell Dr. Goyal or his staff about any medications or medical treatments you are receiving or have had recently.

If you would like to speak with our team to discuss how sedation dentistry can help you and your family or schedule your appointment, just contact us and we’ll happily help you get everything you need. Below you can also find more information about the different types of sedation dentistry.

Types of Sedation Dentistry (Minimal To Moderate)

Oral Conscious Sedation

As a form of minimal sedation, oral conscious sedation combines sedatives and pain relievers as a way of alleviating discomfort during a routine dental operation, such as a basic tooth extraction, while still allowing the patient to remain conscious. A patient undergoing this particular sedation will thus be capable of communicating during the treatment in order to express pain or respond to questions. However, even though the patient is awake during the procedure, they may not recall the treatment afterwards or only remember it in bits and pieces. Some side effects of this procedure can include headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Another type of minimal sedation, and one that is more widely known and used, is that of nitrous oxide, otherwise called “laughing gas.”  Producing a sense of euphoria and light-headedness, nitrous oxide calms the patient, easing them of any anxiety or phobia. For this reason, nitrous oxide may be utilized in the cases of wisdom teeth extractions or dental implants. When the operation ends, the doctor administers oxygen to the patient for five to ten minutes, flushing the lungs of any residual gas, causing the effects of the gas to dissipate so the patient can continue about their day normally.  While side effects are rare for this type of sedation, some patients may experience minor nausea or constipation.

General Anesthesia

As opposed to the aforementioned sedation types, general anesthesia renders the patient unconscious throughout the treatment, completely putting them to sleep. Furthermore, general anesthesia may be received as an injection, intravenously or through gas inhalation, according to the needs of the patient. It benefits not only those who undergo extensive procedures, but also people with preexisting medical conditions pertaining to the heart or lungs. Just like oral conscious and intravenous sedation, general anesthesia causes patients to forget the events immediately preceding and following the treatment. Using general anesthesia is safe in the hands of trained professional dentists like Dr. Goyal.
