Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial replacements for natural teeth, which have been improving the lives of millions of people for many years. These natural looking and feeling tooth replacements work just like natural teeth and come with many benefits and advantages over other tooth replacement options. Dental implants provide many tooth replacement solutions including:

  • Single Tooth Replacement
  • Anterior Tooth Replacement
  • Posterior Tooth Replacement
  • Full Upper Replacement

Types of Implants

A dental implant provides a very stable foundation for a replacement tooth that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth. When a missing tooth is replaced with a dental implant, the patient can eat all his or her favorite foods. The implant will also help preserve the jawbone so that youthful facial contours can be maintained. Patients who have dental implants can smile with confidence knowing there are no unsightly gaps visible in their smiles. Implants do not decay or need root canal treatment. As such, these tooth replacements can last longer than other options for replacing missing teeth such as tooth-supported bridges. There are several types of dental implants including:

  • The Root ImplantThe root implant is the most popular type as well as the most effective because it is made to match the size and shape of the patient's natural tooth. This type of implant is strong and durable, just like a natural tooth. The artificial root is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia and then allowed to heal & integrate with the bone. Following the healing process, the patient returns to the dental office so that the implant is fitted with the new tooth. The entire process takes anywhere from 3 to 8 months to complete.
  • The Plate Form Implant – This type of implant is often used when the jawbone is not wide enough to properly support a root implant.
  • The Subperiosteal Implant – This type of implant is used when the jawbone has receded to the point it can no longer support an implant.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Implants?

While dental implants are a very popular method for replacing missing teeth, this tooth replacement option is not right for everyone. The ideal candidate for dental implants has healthy gums and sufficient bone density to support an implant. People with uncontrolled diabetes do not make good candidates for implants due to having an inability to heal properly.
Only your Columbia MD dentist can determine if you'd make a good candidate for dental implants by reviewing your health history and examining the health of your teeth and gums.
